The lake is fed by the Tonle Sap River, which flows into the Mekong River, and is particularly special because its water flow changes direction twice a year.
During the wet season, the Mekong River’s heavy rainfall causes the river to overflow and reverse its flow, resulting in the lake expanding up to five times its size and becoming a vital source of food and water for Cambodia’s people.
